Writing Workshops

Winter 2017-2018
Craft Workshops

I’m excited to be facilitating monthly Craft workshops (2nd Saturday of each month in 2018) AND offering 1-to-1 writing sessions that are catered to what you as a writer need. Want to go over a story? Need a sounding board for an idea? Want to dig deep into an element of POV, dialogue, setting? This will be offered after each Craft workshop, and also can be scheduled separately.

Setting

Saturday, November 18, 2017
Time: 1pm to 3:30pm
Location: PDX Writers Studio in NE Portland, Hollywood area
Cost: $45
Register for this workshop.

Setting is a critical element of story. If written with intention, it can expose and influence characters, shape the voice and tone of the story, and ground the reader in worlds both foreign and familiar. Through prompts, we will  explore setting’s function in different genres, and create evocative and rich worlds for our fiction and memoirs.

Point of View – Whose Story Is It Anyway?

Saturday January 13th 2018
Time: 10a – 12:30p
Location: PDX Writers Studio
Cost: $55

In this workshop, we will ask the question “Whose scene is it really?” Write a scene from one viewpoint. Write it again from someone else’s. What about that passerby? How would they see the scene? This workshop can help you find the strongest voice of a piece, or solidify and deepen your characterizations.

Point of View – 1st or 3rd?

Saturday February 10th
Time: 10a – 12:30p
Location: PDX Writers Studio
Cost: $55

1st person, 3rd person, God? Which point of view serves your story? What are the pros and cons of each type? In this workshop, we will write from multiple “camera” views and find the narration that makes the story sizzle.

Character Analysis

Saturday March 10th
Time: 10a – 12:30p
Location: PDX Writers Studio
Cost: $55

Let’s really get to know our characters before we commit them to the novel or story. Through focused prompts, we will ask our characters to reveal themselves and tell us their stories. It is often surprising what they say, and that surprise might just be the hook your story needs.

Dialogue

Saturday April 14th
Time: 10a – 12:30p
Location: PDX Writers Studio
Cost: $55

No more talking heads. No more “’I hate you!’ she screamed wildly” lines. Through a mixture of action, character and motives, we will mold our dialogue to both illuminate character and move the plot forward.

Editing Bootcamp

Saturday May 12th
Time: 10a – 12:30p
Location: PDX Writers Studio
Cost: $55

We love it. We hate it. Without it, a story is doomed. This interactive workshop will walk you through a specific process for deep editing of paragraphs, sentences and words. We will cut and paste and move and chip away at our work until it is powerful. Please bring 2-3 copies of 3 pages of a work in progress.

The 1st 10 Pages

Saturday June 9th and June 16th
Time: 10a – 12:30p
Location: PDX Writers Studio
Cost: $110

Your first ten pages make a lasting impression on your reader – and carry a great responsibility. Here we establish setting, tone, pace, genre. In these few pages we offer the reader a taste of what is to come, hooking them through conflict, character, and stakes. This is not the place for saggy back story or long winded narrative. This is about action and getting your reader to jump in feet first.

In this workshop we will share and rewrite our first 10 pages, using prompts to explore and deepen the opening and lay the groundwork for the story to come.

Historical Fiction – with Alida Thacher

Saturday July 14, 21, 28
Time: 1pm – 3:30pm
Location: PDX Writers Studio
Cost: $165

Using readings, exercises and prompts, we will examine the constraints and opportunities afforded to create authentic historical fiction. We will delve into the mores and worldviews of characters who inhabit eras far different from our own – and connect them to our modern selves.
